Having a pool is great for keeping cool on a hot day, getting some exercise, and even just relaxing. For those living in warmer areas, having your own place to swim in clearly has its benefits.

What many of us might not consider is that a pool can be quite dangerous especially for young children or small pets. Around 67% of toddler drowning cases in Australia happened in backyard swimming pools. Luckily, swimming pool fences can easily prevent these kinds of accidents from happening.

This article will teach you everything you need to know about pool fences so that you won’t have to worry about anything unwanted falling into your backyard lido.

Description

A pool safety fence is a kind of barrier that is placed around the whole perimeter of a swimming pool to prevent young children from accidentally falling in. These fences are typically made out of aluminum, glass, or PVC.

Aluminum Swimming Pool Fences

This kind of fence is already widely used for landscaping and comes in a variety of sizes. Aside from being incredibly durable, aluminum fences also require very little to no maintenance after installation. They are resistant to rust and are also not prone to rotting, developing molds, or insect infestations. An aluminum fence can be easily adjusted to match the layout of your backyard and can give a refined and classic touch to your entire pool area.

Glass Fencing

Glass is perfect for swimming pool areas because of its resistance to chlorine-containing pool chemicals. It is a strong material and is made to last for a long time with the proper care. A glass fence provides an unobstructed view of the pool and can even make that space appear larger. However, it will require regular cleaning and the material scratches rather easily. Though it may require more maintenance than other kinds of fencing, it is still a good consideration because of its durability and versatility.

Pool Fence Regulations

In order to avoid any problems before installation, be sure that your swimming pool fence meets the following specifications:

  • Must measure at least 1.2 meters in height
  • Boundary fences must measure at least 1.8 meters in height
  • The gap between the ground and the bottom of the barrier must measure 100mm or less
  • Gaps between fence posts must measure 100mm or less
  • No means of climbing over the fence
  • Gates must be self-closing
  • Latches must be placed out of the reach of children

You can also contact your local council to ask about further regulations as they can vary between states and areas.
